Gun Milan and the 36 Gunas in Marriage Matching

By Acharya Devraj Ji7 min read

What Gun Milan Measures

Gun Milan is the traditional system for checking compatibility between two people for marriage. It is based on the Ashtakoot method, which means eight factors. Together these eight factors carry a maximum of thirty six points, called gunas.

The matching is calculated mainly from the Moon nakshatra of each person, because the Moon represents the mind and emotional nature. Two minds that align well are considered a good base for a lasting marriage.

A higher score suggests stronger natural compatibility, while a lower score points to areas that may need more understanding and effort. It is a starting framework, not a final verdict.

It is important to set the right expectation. Gun Milan checks emotional and karmic harmony, but it does not by itself guarantee a happy marriage, nor does a lower score doom one. It is a respected first filter, and a complete reading goes much deeper than the number alone.

The Eight Koots

The thirty six points are distributed across eight koots, each measuring a different layer of compatibility.

  • Varna (1 point): spiritual and ego compatibility.
  • Vashya (2 points): mutual attraction and control.
  • Tara (3 points): health and well being of the couple.
  • Yoni (4 points): physical and instinctive compatibility.
  • Graha Maitri (5 points): mental friendship and intellectual bond.
  • Gana (6 points): temperament and nature.
  • Bhakoot (7 points): love, finances, and family welfare.
  • Nadi (8 points): health and genetic compatibility, the highest weighted factor.

Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight, so issues in these areas receive special attention. A Nadi dosha, for example, is taken seriously, although classical rules also list several conditions under which it cancels.

Understanding the breakdown helps couples see exactly where they align and where they differ. A score of thirty out of thirty six with weakness in a minor koot is very different from the same score with a weakness in Nadi.

Why the Score Is Only Part of the Picture

A common mistake is to treat the Gun Milan number as the whole answer. In reality, eighteen out of thirty six is the traditional minimum considered acceptable, and many happy marriages have moderate scores.

A complete matchmaking analysis looks well beyond Ashtakoot points. It includes:

  • The strength and placement of the seventh house and its lord in both charts.
  • Mangal Dosha and its cancellation factors.
  • The condition of Venus and Jupiter, the natural significators of marriage.
  • The running Dasha periods and whether marriage timing aligns.
  • Longevity and overall chart balance for both partners.

A chart with a high Gun Milan score but a badly afflicted seventh house may need more care than a moderate score with strong marriage houses.

This is why I never reduce a match to a single number. Two charts together tell a story of how two lives may blend. The score opens the conversation, and the deeper analysis completes it. The aim is honest guidance that helps families make a confident, informed decision.

FAQs

What is a good Gun Milan score?+

Eighteen out of thirty six is the traditional minimum considered acceptable. Scores above twenty four are seen as strong, but the quality of the koots matters as much as the total.

Is a low Gun Milan score a dealbreaker?+

Not on its own. A low score signals areas to understand and manage, but the full charts, the seventh house, and Dasha timing often matter more than the raw number.

What is Nadi dosha in matching?+

Nadi is the highest weighted koot, linked to health and genetics. A Nadi dosha is taken seriously, though classical rules list several conditions under which it cancels and the concern is reduced.
